Students

PAS welcomes college, high school, and intermediate school classical music students to take part in its various student activities. Some of these activities may require that their teachers are PAS members. A nominal application fee may be charged for some student activities.

Piano and instrumental students, grades 6 and younger, may join PAS activities with teacher approval if they are performing at MTAC Certificate of Merit Level 6 or higher. Voice students are limited to the High School Division. The age limit for student participation in the Voice and Instrumental Scholarship Competition is 18 years old. Pianists age 16-24 may paticipate in the Sturm-Page Piano Scholarship Competition.

Student Concerts
Performance in the Student Concerts is open to all vocal, instrumental and piano students through Grade 12, and college students through age 23, and must meet the requirements stated above. Student performers should be on time, attend the entire concert and dress appropriately. Applications must be submitted at least ten days prior to the concert date. The Student Concert is Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 2 p.m.

Voice Scholarship Competition
This competition is open to high school students who may not be older than eighteen (18) years of age. Entrants must reside in either Contra Costa or Alameda County. The application fee for the competition is $20. Auditions are not open to the public.

Winners must perform in the Scholarship Winner's Concert to receive their awards. The Scholarship Competition is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2010 starting at 9:00 a.m. and the Winner's Concert is Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

Piano Master Class
Piano students playing at Certificate of Merit Level 6 or above are invited to apply to participate in the PAS Piano Master Class to be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 2 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church. Details will be provided in the PAS Newsletter.

Sturm-Page Piano Scholarship
The Sturm-Page Piano Scholarship is awarded to a talented and deserving piano student, age 16-24 for the purposes of facilitating his or her further piano studies. Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Grace Presbyterian Church, Walnut Creek. The Scholarship Winner's Concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 3 p.m. Details are available in PAS Newsletters.

Violin Master Class
High School violin students are invited to apply to participate in a PAS Violin Master Class to be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 2:00 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church. There is no fee for students whose teachers are PAS Members. Details will be given in future PAS Newsletters.

Student Music Ensemble Workshop
We are partnering with Civic Arts Education to offer a 1-day Music Ensemble Workshop at Shadelands on Friday, June 18, 2010 from noon to 8 p.m.. High school students playing classical or jazz will be coached by some of the best musicians in the Bay Area, and then perform in an evening concert open to the public.

Ensembles will rehearse under the guidance of chamber music or jazz professionals. Beyond the technical aspects of the music, they will be instructed in some of the special needs for small ensemble performance, including communication within the performing group, and interpretation of your selected music.

Dinner and snacks will be provided and each participant will receive a DVD of the evening concert. More Event Details and an Application are available.
